Less Than 185 Days to Go

Some people I know suffer seasonal depression during our winters in Sandpoint due to the lack of sunshine. Most folks cheer on the return of spring, longer days, warmer temps, and the promise of summer around the corner. For me though, I find April kicks in my own seasonal depression as I slowly watch this fabulous snow melt away. With over 24 feet of snow this year, we are blessed with an extra week to play and be on the mountain. The sun reflects the incredible views in the windows of the Sky House and I should feel joy at the change in seasons but even that view can’t shake my doldrums.

It’s been an amazing season at Schweitzer this year. Great snow over the Christmas holidays and an epic February that gifted me with one of my top 5 days ever on skis. I know it’s hard for some folks out there to understand just what skiing and riding are all about, but you’ll have to trust me that I’m not alone in my blues. Sure, spring skiing is a blast and it really is nice to sport a goggle tan around town, but saying goodbye to this snow is really hard.

Yes, I can hear you, “Dig! The lake is calling!” Sure, summer warmth along the shore, kayaking, trail running and the occasional adult beverage or two on the deck at Trinity… yes, these are wonderful things but my skier soul can’t quite let go. More often than not, as I’m out on the lake, my gaze is always drawn to Schweitzer. Looking at the top of Chair 4 as I sit on a friend’s boat, I get lost in memories of riding through the trees in soft, deep snow. Then, as my friend throws the throttle, the wind and spray from the lake bring me back to reality.

I know I’m not alone in this winter obsession. There’s a reason Schweitzer has an early season pass sale. There are so many others who, just like me, are starting to plan for next season the day we close. So many other winter people who love fleece, hats & mittens, the thrill of new gear and the promise of another season. These are my kindred souls. The ones who stand at city beach and stare up at Schweitzer, shiny new passes already attached to their ski coat. Yes, April, it’s nice to see you but I’m already counting down the days. Less than 185 to go…
