Beat the Crowds of the 2010 Olympics
While Whistler maintains asn undeniable status as a destination resort and apres hot spot, Schweitzer, nearly the same driving distance from Seattle (and a far cheaper direct flight into Spokane) also offers expert terrain and massive bowls but completely lackis the crowds - something Whistler will forgo for the 2010 Olympic Games. Nearly the Revel in the solace of the slopes this winter and enjoy the Olympic Games in the comfort of your affordable Selkirk Family Suite, or on the big screens in Taps in the company of a multitude of beverages and occasional live music where you’ll experience our version of après…

Sustainable Steps
While ski resorts leave a footprint on the natural world, they also provide a way for people to get out and appreciate that world during coldest months of the year, so Schweitzer has found ways to lessen the impact. From wind powered chairlifts and creating the position of an environmental coordinator, to more sustainable building and geothermal heating, to simply recycling and awareness throughout employee offices, and energy efficient light bulbs in lodging, Schweitzer is taking measures to ensure that they can connect people to the environment without hurting it.

Terrain Park
Schweitzer’s Stomping Grounds Terrain Park offers an extensive variety of the most unique custom park features around. A 12 foot high wall ride and a variety of jumps keep the experts entertained while beginners build skills in the Terrain Garden on small rails and jumps. Our features are built locally, by Ben Spinney of SpinneyBent Rails, who enjoys widespread acclaim for his work and has been riding at Schweitzer since childhood. Schweitzer’s Terrain Parks are managed by Dan Nylund, Schweitzer’s former Employee of the Year who developed and teaches perhaps the only terrain park management class in the country. This course is offered for credit at North Idaho College. Schweitzer’s terrain parks are maintained nightly by those who ride them daily.

Secret Stashes
It’s no secret that Schweitzer is known for its phenomenal tree skiing, extensive uncharted acreage, short lift lines and its awesome 25 ft. average annual snowfall, but what is perhaps less known, maybe something only the locals know, is the magical result of combing the former elements. Schweitzer deserves acknowledgment for its “ridiculously long lasting powder stashes.” Schweitzer may not get quite the massive dumping that the resorts in Utah see, but what it does get is a pretty significant snow-fall over expansive terrain and far fewer people to track it up. Powder stashes can often be found tucked in trees and just off the glade-side groomers days, even weeks after the storm has passed. You just have to know where to look…
Photo Journal: Follow a local to their favorite sweet spots and experience Schweitzer secret stashes for yourself. There will surely be no shortage of powder shots.

Backcountry Safety
Learn about backcountry safety with one of most “dynamic” backcountry enthusiasts anywhere. Ken Barrett knows the uncharted Selkirks like the back of his glove and would be more than happy to tell you all about it while enjoying Thor’s hot pizza delivered fresh (via skis) directly to the backcountry. We’re not sure what all he’s certified in, but we can almost guarantee that one of them is insanity. Never a dull moment with Backcountry Barrett…

Ross Hall
He has been called the Ansel Adams of Idaho and his silver-scale tributes to the mountain’s early years haunt the walls of Schweitzer interior architecture. Ross hall is well known for his landscape artistry and timeless photos of the town of Sandpoint, as well as astounding portraiture. In 1990 Ross left behind an extensive collection of over 60,000 negatives and 600,000 large format images, which his son Dan works to keep alive. His life was more than just photos but his work has inspired the lives of many locals.

Best of the Mountain and the Lake
To truly appreciate our mountain, one must indulge in a closer look at the backdrop. Sandpoint, Idaho is nestled on the shores of one of the country’s largest (and most beautiful) lakes – Lake Pend Oreille. Not to be outdone by the busy summer season, Sandpoint’s winter time charm is glows in silhouetted snowflakes dancing beneath street lamps and twinkling lights.  While the lake is too huge to freeze over completely, you’ll find ice skaters and fisherman playing in one of the many bays or at nearby Round Lake State Park. One could venture to the countryside for a horse-drawn sleigh ride or dogsled excursion. And while downtown Sandpoint may look quiet on the outside, venture into a shop or restaurant and find local art, live music, shows and movies at the historical Panida Theater, or check the calendar for the many winter events including K-9 Keg races and other holiday events.
