Schweitzer Receives ‘A’ Rating for Environmental Policies
Ski Area Citizens’ Coalition ranks Schweitzer among top ecological resorts

Sandpoint, ID – The Ski Area Citizen’s Coalition (SACC) has named Schweitzer Mountain Resort one of its top ranking resorts in terms of environmental policies and practices, giving the resort an overall ‘A’ grade. The SACC grades resorts on four criteria: habitat protection, protecting watersheds, addressing global climate change and environmental practices, which added together equal the overall grade. Schweitzer has always maintained a procedure of impacting the environment as little as possible while still continuing to offer great skiing. The SACC looked at various programs at Schweitzer including its ramped-up recycling. Recycling has been at the forefront of Schweitzer’s green movement. This year saw the addition of aluminum bins and also plastic bins (which Schweitzer trucks to Spokane to be recycled), along with the already established paper and cardboard recycling. During the 2009 year, Schweitzer recycled 15,000 pounds of cardboard and 6,140 pounds of paper/magazines.

Schweitzer has also begun construction on its new Mountainside community of fractional homes, each of which will be run on geothermal heat. This will result in energy savings of approximately 60% compared to conventional heating/cooling. The resort has also converted many of its products to compostable products and continues to run its shuttle service, which transported 49,000 people to and from the mountain last year, saving 441,000 vehicle miles.
