January - Time to Look Backwards & Forwards on the Slopes!

January gets its name from the Roman god, Janus, who was the god of beginnings and endings, and often depicted as having two faces, looking both forward and backward. Two faces, two directions - a great visual for us as we come full force into winter. You see, it’s this time of year that more people get out on the mountain and we need to look both ways out on the slopes.

An Ode To Snow Ghost

Between the falling snow, howling wind and what seems to be ever-present fog, I'm lost in thought about how even though I loathed the name change at the time it happened, "Snow Ghost" is probably just about perfect for the beloved Schweitzer Mountain chair lift.

There Are Other Ways to Ski

Did you also know that Schweitzer is home to over 20 miles of cross-country ski trails? Perhaps you are someone who is afraid of heights or the thought of sliding down a slippery slope fills you with dread and fear, but have you considered cross-country skiing or snowshoeing?

Idaho Ski Resorts: Discover the Soul of Skiing

Typically, when people think of Idaho, they immediately think of Idaho potatoes and not Idaho ski resorts. And it’s true, with ideal growing conditions and volcanic rich soil, Idaho grown potatoes are pretty darn hard to beat for taste and quality. Let’s admit it, if you have to associate your state with a vegetable, the potato is definitely a good one. But funnily enough, the same reasons why potatoes do so well in and for Idaho are the same reasons why a ski vacation in this underrated state is the best choice.  “What?” you may be thinking. But yes, it’s true! And here’s why -

Winter is Right around the Corner

October is the month for our season pass sale here at Schweitzer and once Halloween is over, you may think there are no more treats to be had. Well, that’s partly true since the season pass deadline ends at midnight on Halloween but there are no tricks here. Instead, here are some other sweet options on the mountain to consider!

5 Things to Focus on As Winter Approaches

Summer in Sandpoint seems to go by at the blink of an eye and in that brief and festive season, I only kayaked once, hiked nothing, and only rode my bike to The Festival. The days were hot and long and I have absolutely no idea where time has gone. And now, now it’s September.

Exploring the Trails - With a Twist

Perhaps its jealousy or frustration that my own body is falling apart faster than I’d like it to, but I find myself having to force my competitive thoughts way, way down into my shoes. It’s not her fault she’s fast or that I’m shaped like a pear. Pears weren’t meant to run.

Breaking Up with Winter

I love snow. I love cold weather, wearing mittens, knitted hats and the sound of the lift as it carries me to the summit. I love it when I have to make fresh tracks on the roads in town early in the morning before the snow plows hit the streets. But after 430” of snow this past winter, I’ll be honest. I need to see other seasons.

Ringing the Bell for "Black Diamond"

As part of my job at Schweitzer, I’m responsible for ringing the bell at the clock tower some mornings. This is a pretty big deal as the bell signifies that the lifts are open and those anxious skiers and riders waiting in line can finally be released to tackle the mountain. But my favorite days to ring the bell are the days the school groups are here.

Thank You, Sandpoint

You may not know it but it’s been a challenging winter for lots of places around the western US. Unseasonably warm temps and lack of precipitation has caused a lot of ski resorts to limp though this season, making snow as and when they can. We, on the other hand, have been unbelievably lucky with the weather this winter.

Schweitzer's super bowls

But what I don’t think a lot of people realize is that Schweitzer has its own version of the Big Game as well. “What,” I hear you ask? Yes, Schweitzer has super bowls. Everyday. All we are missing is the musical at halftime.

Oh Alder Tree, Oh Alder Tree ...

This year, I was a really good girl. I did my homework, ate healthy and even tried to get myself in shape for ski season. I kept thinking that if I was really, really good, Santa would reward me for my excellent behavior and give me the best present I could ever want. No, not another dog, more ski gear or even free housekeeping for a year.  All I wanted for Christmas was awesome tree skiing.

Of Wild Snow Cats and Snow Guns

The language of the mountains can sometimes fool you. For example, the terms “snow cats” and “snow guns” can conjure up images of all sorts of crazy combinations of machinery or hairy beasts with powers like Elsa’s from “Frozen.”

Homecoming - Schweitzer Style

I don’t know about you, but sometimes when I see an envelope in the mail that I know contains a family wedding invitation, my immediate reaction is a mix of excitement and dread. Excited for the couple and the joy their wedding will bring but dread about hanging with third cousins I haven’t seen for at least 16 years.
